Llewellyn Scholarship Fund
Charley Nell Llewellyn spent her life working to make a difference for people. She was an extraordinary lady who left an extraordinary gift to Hardin County. Her $3.4 million total charitable gift is the largest single philanthropic gift ever given in Hardin County.
Charley spent her lifetime advancing causes she believed in – including rights for all people, particularly women. She was an advocate for disadvantaged children and adults, foster care children and mentally and physically challenged people.
Now through her generous gift, she is advancing the lives of 25 Hardin County Schools graduates each year, providing them with a renewable scholarship to attend a college or university of their choice. The scholarship fund is for students who are economically disadvantaged. It has a $6,000 value over four years, if the student continues to meet established academic criteria.
A native of Alabama, Charley moved to Elizabethtown in 1965 and worked as a Social Worker for Hardin County Schools from 1967-1987. She was named Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers in 1978 and, in 1981, she was named the Kentucky Member of the Year by the National Organization for Women.
Now, she will forever continue to advance her most passionate pursuit – educational opportunities for students in Hardin County.
