Heels Together Awards $18,500 in Grants

October 27, 2017 – Heels Together, a women-led strategic initiative of Central Kentucky Community Foundation, awarded nearly $20,000 in grants Thursday evening. This year, three local organizations were presented grants at the 2017 Heels Together Investors Banquet.

Big Brothers Big Sisters was awarded a $5,000 grant for Project ReachHER. Project ReachHER will lift up and support girls, through professionally supported 1-to-1 mentoring, coupled with empowerment activities and self-confidence training. This program provides strong, positive female mentors for young girls to aspire to, learn together and build a friendship that will ultimately translate into more females achieving greater success in life.

Elizabethtown Independent Schools was awarded a $5,000 grant for a STEM-tastic sumMIT. This project will fund two-2day summits to give seventh and eighth-grade girls positive STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) experiences. It will provide girls information about high demand and high wage career fields in our community, encouraging positive academic choices. The curriculum for the STEM-tastic summit is from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Through the generosity of investors, Heels Together was also able to partially fund a third project. Silverleaf Sexual Trauma Recovery Services was awarded $8,500 for a healing garden. Healing gardens provide psychological, social, physical, emotional and spiritual benefits to victims of trauma. Those who experience sexual violence often have short and long-term health consequences. This garden will aid the healing process for people impacted by sexual violence.

“These organizations serve a broad range of ages and apply innovative solutions to critical problems faced by women and girls throughout our community,” said Davette B. Swiney, President and CEO of Central Kentucky Community Foundation. “We know that when women and girls thrive, communities prosper, and that is why we are passionate about Heels Together.”

“Heels Together is unique in the fact that it was started by a group of local community-minded women from various backgrounds, professions, and personalities. There was and is at least one very important common element—each woman loves the community and wants to help girls and women succeed,” said Heels Together Investor, Marilyn Ford. “It is an unusual opportunity and a personal blessing to work along-side others to provide resources to support programs that are having an amazing impact on girls, women, their families and ultimately our community through Heels Together.”

Thirty-eight women in our community invested in Heels Together to fund grant requests and the Heels Together Endowment. Each investor gives $1,000 annually. Half the funds are placed in an endowment – a fund that only

spends earnings and preserves the initial investment – and half is used for annual grant awards. Following the grant presentations at the banquet, investors placed their vote to determine the awarded proposals. Grant awards are based on organizations and programs that provide educational opportunities, leadership development and economic empowerment to women and girls in our community.

Heels Together has now awarded more than $62,000 in grants since its inception in 2014. This initiative makes a lasting impact by awarding significant grants that improve the quality of life for women and girls in our community.
